Unlike cats, dogs are very prone to getting dirty without the ability to lick themselves clean. When it comes to deciding between taking your dog to a professional groomer or doing it yourself, there are a few things you should consider. That’s why our team here at Coastal Paws Pet Resort has come up with a few pros and cons to grooming your pup yourself versus letting a professional.
Do-It-Yourself Grooming
Depending on your experience with dogs, there are a few things you’ll need to get the grooming process started. For starters, you’ll need the basics: a decent brush, shampoo/conditioner, toenail clippers, and hair trimmers with safety guards. While it may be expensive starting out, it’ll end up saving you money in the long run.
Another advantage of grooming your pup yourself is they’ll probably be less stressed and anxious if you’re the one doing the grooming instead of a stranger – especially if you’re doing the grooming in your own home.
One disadvantage to grooming your pup yourself is the time it will take. If you’re not sure of where to start, there are plenty of online resources you can read and watch to help you safely groom your pup. Aside from grooming, the clean-up, once you’re done, will also take up some of your time.
Professional Grooming
If you’re leaning towards letting a professional groomer take care of your grooming your pup, then you probably won’t have much to worry about since they’ve got the experience and are certified. By letting a professional do it, you’ll save on time even though you’ll end up spending a bit more money.
Another advantage of going to a professional groomer is they’ll be able to recommend the best treatment options for your pup based on their breed, coat, age, stress-level, etc. Since they’re experienced, they’ll be able to examine your pup and point out any abnormalities or problems they find that you could miss if you do the grooming yourself.
Overall, the decision is up to you. If you have the extra money to spend to take your pup to the groomers every few months and you can do a few touch-ups yourself in between, then that may be the best option. Of course, we’re not here to judge and are more than happy to help answer any questions you may have! Don’t hesitate to reach out to our staff here at Coastal Paws Pet Resort!
Going to a professional groomer for our pet dog might work out for sure. Our dog is of a breed that has some extremely difficult coat maintenance factors, so it’s something that we might be able to handle 100% of the time. If I can find a dog grooming expert in the area, I’ll ask them to help me out with my dog’s coat from now on.
